G4’s Matt Keil claims D’toid “making shit up” regarding negative Mass Effect preview.
It has been a long-standing fact that the internet is, indeed, serious business. This is a perfect example of that. Saturday, Destructoid writer “Orcist” posted his thoughts on the upcoming Bioware RPG Mass Effect. In this post, he states that he believed the presentation was lacking, especially in the “emotionless voice acting and subpar facial animations”, and went on to say that “At worst, Mass Effect is disappointing.”
Naturally, this negative preview has sparked mass rioting across all the internet, plaguing message boards everywhere with “zomg estructoid is suxxors!”. However, there is a single voice crying foul in all of this. A single voice of fanboy hope everywhere!
X-Play Writer/Producer Matt Keil.
Over at the NeoGaf forums, Writer/Producer Matt Keil of G4’s X-Play felt the need to chime in, and boy did he!
Do not believe this preview. I had the first hour of the game played in front of me, and none of Destructoid’s criticisms are valid. This is either truly awful taste or a pathetic attempt to get more hits. Possibly both.
Mass Effect has the most incredible facial animation of any game ever (at the time I saw it, anyway…Heavenly Sword tops it in cutscenes, IMO), and the voice acting is perfectly fine. The beginning of the game is all space navy “Sir, we have visual” shit, anyway. It’s obviously not going to be Gone With The Wind.
There are plenty of things to worry about with Mass Effect without making up shit about the presentation. This preview is simply not describing the game I saw.
Woo! E-Drama! Look, whether or not you want to agree with the D’toid preview is one thing, but to come right out and say someone is wrong about an opinion is just bullheaded. Especially when you’re the writer and producer of a television program that specializes entirely in opinion! Of ALL the people who have the right to bitch, Mr. Keil, you are last on that list.
Period.

Stupid article. Hitler’s opinion was that Jews were the route of all evil, and killed 6 million of them. Was this not a wrong opinion? I know this is a very poor comparison.. I mean comparing the halocaust to a poor review of Mass Effect. It’s obvious not even the halocaust can express the importance of such an error. This IS Mass Effect after all. If you want to have a retarded ass opinion, that’s cool. Just leave it off the internet. There’s kids here, they don’t need to be exposed to stuff like false negative previews of Mass Effect. That’s all I’m saying. Have a little common decency. Thanks.

Hmm, I wonder what would be a good analogy for a poor game preview? I know! Nazi Germany!

whoa whoa whoa, what does he mean “there are enough things to worry about in mass effect..” is he saying there are big problems in the game, just not in the presentation? then what’s the point of saying any of this at all?
(sorry for my poor spelling and grammar, I seem to come from a foreign land where i want people to understand what I’m Saying!

It was either NAZI germany, or the Apacolypse. Apacolypse hasn’t happened yet, so it may or may not be worse. Whatever the greatest travesty to befall mankind, none comes close to slandering Mass Effect. Especially on the internet, since everything on the internet should be taken seriously, and literally.

I just want to say that the whole Nazi D’toid Mass Effect review analogy is horrible. I think the above article hit the nail on the head. Reviews are someones opinion and if someone felt that way then they have a right to put that in the review. I am sorry the fan boys aren’t happy about it but its just the way the reviewer felt. Maybe D’toid is pushing some buttons but we don’t know. Lastly, the final sentence was quite funny and true.

People shouldn’t be allowed to have stupid opinions. What if someone came up to you and said “Wow, Bioshock sucks.”? Don’t pretend like you wouldn’t stab them.

Soup,
Congrats, you managed to bring nazi germany up in the first post, effectively cutting through the many tedious hours of comments debating the game or other commenter’s sexual preference.

Opinions are opinions, at least as long as they don’t try to stray into facts. Trying to gauge the quality of voice acting and facial animation is a very subjective issue, but their is a perception point where it changes from just opinion to fact. I think both of the people referred to have crossed that nebulous boundary that separates the two.
Point is, don’t worry about what either side said, until you get to see an actual clip for yourself to decide what You think. Then you can choose whether Orcist was either full of it himself, or just nitpicking irrelevancies. And for that matter, whether Matt wouldn’t know animation if it bit him, or whether he was just giving a little leeway to an alpha/beta version that will be cleaned up before release.
Of course, there is the possibility that one of them is right on the money, and the other is trolling for flames… (Problem is, anyone who hasn’t seen the presentation or the game hasn’t got a clue.)
