Borderlands will NOT Require HDD!
Remember last week how it was announced that Borderlands will require a HDD to play by Gearbox president Randy Pitchford? Yeah, that doesn’t seem to be the case any longer!
Steve Jones, the lead programmer on Borderlands, announced on the Gearbox message boards that Borderlands will NOT require a HDD, as previously reported.
Hey everyone, my name is Steve Jones and I’m the lead programmer on Borderlands. While we are doing some amazing things in this game, the Xbox 360 version will NOT require a hard drive. The game will take full advantage of the hard drive if it is present, but again, it will not be required.

So is this finally the end of the story? We know that at this very moment Microsoft requires that all games be playable withOUT the HDD, with the sole exception being MMO titles like Final Fantasy XI. However, that can always change.

In general I wish that most games required HDD, as it is with all games forced to work for the tiny percentage of 360s that don’t have HDDs means developers have to write code that runs exclusively off the DVD, which increases load times dramatically.
In an ideal world, you would be able to “load” game data to the HDD for faster load times and better performance, people with 20Gb could choose to load a gig or less but people with an Elite might want to load an entire game after which point the DVD is only used for copy protection purposes. (Which is a necessary evil)
